Quick Jump to PC-Engine - Nintendo 64 - Mega Drive - PSP - Wiz

SNK Neo Geo (1990)

This is the Rolls Royce .....

I got this one directly from Japan, with a Joyboard and even a fully functionnal Memory Card

When i was young, i enjoyed playing Neo Geo titles in the Arcades.

My favourite game back then was Ninja Combat. Oh boy I remember putting a lot of coins in that Machine, along with my best Friend.

Of course, this was the first game cartridge i purchased for this system.

When I was younger, I always wanted to possess a Neo Geo System. Unfortunately, it was very expensive. I even tracked the French / Luxembourg Conversion Rate every day (No shop in Luxembourg carried this System, the only possible way to get it was in France)

NEC PC Engine (1987)

Also known as Core-Grafx, this little Sucker has known tremendous success, mainly (and sadly) in Japan. It was shortly released in Europe.

I never got the Chance to buy one as a kid, but now, you can call me a proud owner of a PC-Enging .

Got this cheap from a French Man via PriceMinister.com

There a tons of Games, just like the NES, but the graphics were better compared to Nintendo's 8Bitter.

Nintendo 64 (1996)

First known as Project Reality, then as Ultra64, this one's been awaited by a large audience, including myself.

When I finally put my hands on it, I remember it very well, it was together with a few Friends that we discovered Super Mario 64. Bamm ! That was a ......hmmm there's no way to describe what we've felt at the precise moment. It was great ! Excellent Gameplay, tons of great ideas and and and.... But there have been other great games too, Wave Race for example, what a racer !

Overall, it was a great piece of Hardware, but the best were definitely the multiplayer sessions with Mario Kart 64 (I still miss them Cry )

Sega Mega Drive (1988)

Also known as the Genesis in the US, this was the first true 16Bit Console out there. (Although it was only my second 16Bit Console, second to the Super Nintendo)

I remember the Mega Drive as a more "out-of the conformity" machine. Games were more apealing to a teenager-audience (in which I fitted perfectly at the time) then the Nintendo Consoles.

Sony PSP (2004)

First thing I noticed when I got my PSP Slim & Lite is the display quality of the Screen. Due to it's higher resolution (480x272), watching Movies is really enjoyable on this little sucker.

I wanted to get one because of one single Game : God of War - Chains of Olympus.(This game is totally awesome, if you liked the PS2 versions, go out and get this !) Since then, I've discovered other nice Games, like Locoroco. There's also one of the hardest Games ever : Ultimate Ghouls 'n Ghosts. And of Course, Dracula X Chronicles with the Original PSX Classic Castlevania Symphony of the Night as a Bonus Content.

Lately, there has been a lack of great Games on the PSP, but things seem to be changing, as at the end of 2009 there will be a few Highlights like Motorstorm, Gran Turismo and Little Big Planet for the PSP.

GP2X Wiz (2009)

Successor of the nearly legendary GP2X from Gamepark Holdings.

I got this from Play-asia.com in August 2009. Since then, this little fellow (it is very tiny compared to a PSP) has proven why it is so successful.

I really like to run old Games (from the NES, Super Nintendo or even the NeoGeo, Games I actually own...) while on the road or during lunchtime at Work. It is very lightweight, the Screen is fantastic (although it runs at a very low resolution, like 320x240), even in a dark room, due to it's OLED Technology.

The built in Games are surprisingly good. There are tons of Homebrew Games, but there is one that I especially like : Animatch. It's a clone of a Game Boy Advance Game called Zoo Keeper; but way better: Graphics and Sound are at a very HighLevel for a Homebrew game.

This Handheld comes only second to my DS's in termes of favorship. Only annoyances are the custom USB Cable (kinda weird when you think of the GP2X Wiz as an OpenSource Linux Driven Device) and it's very very long charging times.

Sony Playstation (1994)

For a very long tim e(2 months to be honest), I didn't want a Playstation, I was a Sega Saturn Fan.

Until that one day came : MY best friend at that time received his Playstation (or as we called it , a PSX) and invited me to his house to have a nice gaming session together. It was pretty cool, until he inserted THE game that made me forget my Saturn : WipeOut.

The very next day, I had my own PSX. There were some very great Games on this machine, some of them which I still like o play to this date :

  • WipeOut (of course)
  • Resident Evil (What else?)
  • Castlevania Symphony of the Night (Holy Shit ! This is one of my all-time favourites)
  • Gran Tursimo
  • Tekken 2 & 3

..and the list goes on and on....

But there was not only light with this console, there were also some very very dark clouds... One fact that I dislike so much with this machine is the fact that SONY is (IMHO) responsible for the masses of illegally copied Games. Ok, at that time, a CD Burner cost like a few hundred Euros, and who could have known that they would ddrop in price so fast.

But still, I believe that Sony didn't put enough effort in making their games "uncopiable", and speculated that Games would be easily to copy , so more Machines could be sold. I know this sounds ridiculous, but this could be a way to enter a market and to quickly claim having the most-sold system in the world.

I think that if it was more difficult to copy games (every kid in my school knew how to do it and did it !), the Playstation would not have been so successful.

I am very proud for being able to claim that all my PSX-Games are genuine and legal :)
